Markus Buhler, an apprentice watchmaker working for IWC back in 2003, designed and invented what is called the “turbine” movement during an apprenticeship competition where he took first prize at the Prix IFHH de I’Horlogerie. IWC, so impressed with the victorious and innovative movement that beat out 63 other competitors, decided to launch a model of its own honoring the triumph and incorporating the movement into a Special Edition Big Pilot Series of just 12 watches. Commonly known within IWC circles as the “Buhler project”, Buhler along with other highly motivated apprentices worked tirelessly to perfect the movement and ensure all twelve of the watches had undergone the most stringent testing and quality controls standards – consistent with all IWC timepieces. In late 2008, IWC released the IWC Big Pilot Edition “Markus Buhler”.
